Introduced in 1990 to equip new riders with the skills needed to take a motorcycle on the road.
Takes place in a safe off-road environment.
Can only be given by instructors who have been assessed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).
The course is broken down into five elements which will be worked through in order.
The elements are:
(aims & objectives of the course)
(safety clothing, helmets, visors)
- Practical on-site training
(learning to ride the bike)
- Practical on-road training
(hazard perception, conspicuity, legal requirements)
(taking all your new skills out on to the road)
There is no exam for this course just a continual assessment by your instructor, the course takes about a day to complete but sometimes it may be necessary for you to come back and have more training.
On completion of the course you will be issued with your CBT Certificate (DL196) which lasts for two years and validates your licence. This will allow you to take a bike out on the road on your own.
